Many things can cause your pelvic floor to weaken—hormonal changes, aging, surgery, childbirth, and even stress or anxiety. When these muscles weaken, you notice uncomfortable and even embarrassing symptoms, including:
- Urinary incontinence
- Discomfort during movement or sexual intimacy
- Erectile dysfunction
- Weak orgasms
- Urine and stool leakage
People come to visit our team at Iowa Wellness Center to improve these concerns with pelvic floor therapy near Iowa City. While the most commonly known urinary incontinence treatment is a Kegel exercise, there’s an innovative, effective, and powerful therapy option we are proud to offer at our center—the Emsella chair.

Kegels
Kegel exercises seem convenient, as you can do them at home and strengthen your pelvic floor over time. These involve repeatedly lifting, holding, and then relaxing your pelvic floor muscles. It’s recommended to do a set of 10 every morning and night.
While effective, they can be quite risky. If you’re not performing these exercises correctly, you could experience negative side effects on top of the symptoms you’re already trying to treat. That’s why it’s important to see a trained medical professional to teach you how to do these and who can track your progress.
Emsella
Emsella effectively and correctly induces up to 12,000 Kegel-like muscle contractions in just 28 minutes. The best part? You’re only required to arrive on time to our office and sit comfortably in a chair.
This technology uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy to stimulate these contractions in your pelvic floor muscles. In a series of 6 to 12 sessions, you can notice improved blood flow, more control over your bladder, and better sexual function.
Better Together
Why compete and compare? Emsella is a great option to achieve noticeable results quickly—which we know you want. But our team can also teach you how to do proper Kegel exercises at home, supplementing your Emsella regimen with added support for optimal results. Emsella is more powerful and effective than Kegels, but these exercises can support your pelvic floor between Emsella sessions.
