Ozone therapy is becoming more popular for its known potential to help manage chronic diseases, promote wound healing, and support immune function.
But this form of regenerative medicine is far from new. In fact, ozone has been used and studied in various forms for over 150 years, with documentation to support its efficacy.
At Iowa Wellness Center, we offer ozone therapy and ozone blood therapy near Cedar Rapids. These treatments can both enhance your overall well-being, and depending on your specific health concerns, one may be more effective than the other. To learn more about the differences and benefits of ozone therapy and extracorporeal blood ozonation and oxygenation (EBOO), keep reading!
What Is Ozone Therapy?
Ozone therapy uses medical-grade ozone—generated from pure oxygen—for therapeutic purposes. The treatment introduces this oxygen-rich compound into the body, helping to enhance immune function, promote healing, and much more.
The Importance of Oxygen for Your Health
Let’s take a moment to talk about the importance of oxygen—the colorless, odorless gas we breathe every day. Oxygen fuels our bodies’ energy production and helps deliver nutrients to cells. Low levels of oxygen can cause a range of symptoms, including shortness of breath, headache, anxiety, and restlessness.
We offer oxygen therapy to improve breathing, reduce fatigue, protect organs from damage, and promote wound healing. This process involves administering oxygen through a nasal cannula or a facemask to increase the oxygen concentration in your body.
Ozone vs. Oxygen
The oxygen we breathe has 2 oxygen atoms, known as O₂. Ozone, on the other hand, is made with 3 oxygen atoms, known as O₃. This additional atom allows ozone to support the body’s natural ability to eliminate viruses, fungi, harmful toxins, and free radicals, while helping alleviate symptoms associated with chronic diseases and conditions like neuropathy, disc herniation, immune dysfunction, and more.
During your consultation, we can discuss oxygen and ozone therapy with you, and decide which treatment can help with your health and wellness goals.
Ozone Therapy vs. Ozone Blood Therapy
Near Cedar Rapids, we offer EBOO, an specialized form of Ozone therapy that can also be considered ozone dialysis, because it involves extracting your blood, filtering it through a diffuser to eliminate harmful germs and toxins, and re-injecting it back into your body through a different vein.
What Can EBOO Treat?
EBOO can help with chronic conditions and diseases, improve immune response, and reduce inflammation.
Neuropathy
EBOO is just one of many options for peripheral neuropathy treatment that we offer at Iowa Wellness Center. Neuropathy results from damage to or dysfunction of your peripheral nervous system. It can cause a wide range of symptoms, but most commonly, patients experience tingling sensations, burning pain, or sharp, stabbing pains.
Researchers are still trying to understand what causes neuropathy. As of now, a single underlying cause for this condition has not been discovered. However, there are links between neuropathy symptoms, nutritional deficiencies, and lack of blood flow.
EBOO can improve blood flow by supplying your body with supercharged oxygen, helping it deliver essential vitamins and minerals to cells and organs. We often combine IV therapy with ozone blood therapy near Cedar Rapids as part of a comprehensive neuropathy treatment.
Arthritis
Arthritis is a common disease, especially for people over the age of 50, that can cause pain, stiffness, and inflammation in your joints. There are over 100 types of arthritis; however, the 2 most common types are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis causes the cartilage in the joints to wear down. Although this degenerative condition usually develops with age, it can be escalated by accidents or injuries.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where your immune system attacks the tissue lining your joints. In some cases, rheumatoid arthritis can cause osteoarthritis.
EBOO can reduce inflammation in the body, helping ease pain and improve your mobility.
Immunodeficiency
When your immune system is functioning properly, it can distinguish between your own cells and cells that don’t belong in your body. With this information, once it perceives a threat, it not only sets off a series of events to kill harmful germs, viruses, and fungi, but it also learns about them to develop antibodies and build up your immunity.
Ozone blood therapy near Cedar Rapids can improve your immune system by replacing weak cells with new, healthy cells. This makes your body less vulnerable to infection and disease. It also disrupts and damages different types of harmful invaders with its strong antimicrobial properties.
Autoimmune Diseases
Autoimmune diseases happen when your immune system is overactive and attacks your body rather than defending it. There are more than 100 different autoimmune diseases that affect your joints, nervous system, and skin. A few examples include Hashimoto’s disease and lupus.
Because ozone therapy can reduce your immune system’s activity, alleviating pain and other symptoms involved in autoimmune diseases.
Please understand that ozone blood therapy is a treatment to help manage these conditions, and not a cure for them. For best results, we may have you come back to our office for maintenance treatments.

The Process at Iowa Wellness Center
It all starts with an introduction, so we can determine if ozone therapy is right for you!
Comprehensive Consultation
To start, we invite you into our office to discuss your health and wellness concerns. We ask when you noticed the onset of your symptoms and what you’ve done to try and manage the pain.
After reviewing your medical history, we determine if ozone blood therapy is right for you, and discuss the options for combination treatments as well. Send you home with an estimated number of treatments you’ll need to feel better, and a list of pre- and post-care instructions.
Treatment
Ozone blood therapy takes around 90 minutes per session. During this time, we encourage you to bring some form of entertainment, like a book, as you will be asked to sit still throughout your treatment. We typically recommend 3 treatments to start, and then ask you to come back once every 3 to 6 months for maintenance sessions.
Results
Patient results vary depending on the severity of their symptoms and the number of treatments necessary. You may notice gradual improvements in how you feel that continue to become more apparent as you complete your treatments.
